When evaluating a retinal nevus, you want reliable, noninvasive documentation of its appearance over time. Fundus photography provides a color image of the lesion and surrounding retina, establishing baseline size, color, and borders. Red-free photography uses a monochromatic filter that enhances contrast of pigmented lesions, making margins and surface features more easily delineated.
